Our Programs
Students meet each Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. throughout the school year to receive instruction in Math, Science, Language Arts, Music, Visual Arts, and Chess. Students, ranging in age from 5 to 18, participate in this comprehensive program that uniquely uses the award-winning Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra (PVYSO) to motivate young people to be excellent students and citizens. The Summer Lab offers youths ages 10-18 an intensive three-week music laboratory on the steel drums and percussion, in addition to academic tutoring in Math and Reading. The three-week intensive includes an all-day schedule of Music Theory, Arranging, Practical Lessons, Small and Large Ensembles, Music Appreciation, Latin Percussion, and optional Academic classes. Students are taught by trained and experienced music instructors from around the world. Youth who complete the summer lab are encouraged to audition for entry into CAFE’s year-round Saturday Academy. Through a new partnership initiative, CAFE will be offering Satyananda Yoga classes instructed by Cherryl Clement. CAFE seeks to prepare students to examine their world critically and respond to its challenges with creativity. Students are encouraged to assume leadership; to value the opportunity for service; and, to accept, understand and appreciate the diversity of their community and the world. Throughout the school year, CAFE students typically participate in special life-skills related programs and workshops. Learn more
The Cultural Academy For Excellence offers steel pan classes and ensemble opportunities for adults. Weekly classes introduce students to musical concepts and techniques relevant to the steel band art form. PanTones, our adult ensemble, provides performance opportunities for members in a traditional steel band setting. The Pan Class and PanTones meet Wednesday evenings 7 pm – 9 pm and Saturday mornings from 10 am – 12:00 pm. Learn more
